have you ever seen poplar wood with multiple colors in the grain?

today my husband and i went to home depot to get some wood for some shelves that we’re going to install and we found some poplar wood. most of it was like any other lumber but we found several pieces that had streaks of black in them and then on closer inspection also streaks of green, blue, violet, etc. they are gorgeous and i plan to stain them with just a clear varnish or something. we are just wondering why we haven’t seen this wood before and why furniture isn’t made out of this unusual grained wood. we’re crazy about it and wondering why poplar isn’t more popular!??

Actually, Poplar is used quite a bit in the furniture industry. I know, because Ive used it extensively myself in production.

It is considered to be one of the more easily replenished woods – it grows relatively quickly, as far as trees go.

Typically, we use poplar under a painted finish, or when there is going to be a dark stain, such as cherry. Quite a few furniture pieces with a dark cherry stain, are actually poplar wood frames (or other ’solids’), with a cherry veneer panel, or cabinet. Poplar also finds a use in structural components…inside furniture, particularly seating. While it is a tight grained wood, it is relatively soft, so that makes it easy to machine.

Ive also used a lot of poplar plywood. I actually prefer it for my projects over conventional exterior grade plywood. It has a smoother surface, great hold for screws, and is very stable.

The black streaks you saw in your pieces are from minerals, the other colors, the lime green, violet etc, are natural to the wood. It tends to run towards a cream color to a white with just a tint of green in it, as the basic color, and then you get the color variations in it too. Most ‘blanks’ manufacturers, in the past, tended to ‘optimize’ their stock by removing the bulk of those color shifts, making the wood appear more uniform. It is removed completely when being used for ’stained’ furniture, like curio cabinets, armoirs, and other pieces you would purchase at a furniture store. (The green and purple don’t fare well with a dark cherry stain, lol)

So, it actually is a “popular” wood…. but its a trade secret, lol…those outside the furniture industry aren’t aware of just how much it gets used. (By the way, most poplar being used in the USA is actually grown in Canada.) I’m not sure just how many trainloads of it that I’ve used over the years, but I’m sure its quite a bit.

When you goto work on your shelving… get all your parts cut and assembled…sand it down with about a 100 grit paper, and then apply a coat of sanding sealer. Then do a light scuff with 220 grit paper, and try not to cut thru the sealer. The purpose of the sanding sealer is to lock the wood fibers in place….helping you achieve a smoother final finish, with less hand scraping, etc. Top it off with a good polyurethane, and you’re all set.
If you were going to paint the poplar, then I’d recommend a good PVA primer, before the paint, to help get a glossier finish.
